Youth starting in 7th grade and older are instructed for two years in the six chief teachings of the Bible: the Ten Commandments, the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, Baptism, the Office of the Keys, and the Lord’s Supper. The basis for this instruction is the Small Catechism written by Martin Luther which is drawn from the Scriptures and summarizes each of these teachings. Students of the Catechism should be led to see the importance of the truths from God’s Word for their lives and should grow in their deep appreciation for all that the Lord Jesus Christ has done as their Savior.
The purpose of this class is to prepare them for proper reception of the Lord’s Supper and that they would grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ so that they may always make the good and necessary confession of faith in a world that is so often hostile to true Christianity. Parents are strongly encouraged to fulfill their responsibility to teach and reinforce what is taught to the catechists by the pastor.
The class meets once a week for nine months of the year. There is work in and out of class, including the study and memorization of the Bible, Catechism, hymns, terms, completion of a workbook, other readings, questioning before the congregation, and more. Please contact the pastor for more information.
